Seven Mayo AC athletes won a total of 20 medals at the AAI National Masters Indoors Championships at Nenagh. As usual it was colder track-side than outside at this venue. Club chairman Padraic Cullina set the standard on Saturday in the combined events quadrathlon. He amassed a fine total of 1,419 points competing in the 60 metres, long jump, shot, and 1,000 metres to win gold. On Sunday, when the indoors championship events took place, he won gold in the long jump and silver in the high jump in over 50 category. Patrick Moran (over 55) won four medals — gold in the high jump, silver in both the long jump and 400 metres, and bronze in 1,500 metres. PJ Hall (over 50) was one of four Mayo AC athletes competing indoors for the first time. He won silver in 200 metres and bronze 60 metres. Breege Blehein-McHale (over 40) won gold and silver medals. Ann Murray (over 45) won three silver medals in the 800m, 1,500m, and 3,000m, and Anthony Devaney (over 35) won silver in the 3,000m and bronze in the 800m. Tom Hunt (over 60) was second in the 400m and 3,000m and third in 800m and 1,500m. This was a great start to the championship year for Mayo AC and they will be looking to add to this medal haul at the intermediate and masters cross country at Forest Park in Boyle on February 21.

The event was hosted by Finn Valley AC and attracted a field of over 200 of the top club athletes from all over the country. The 13.1 mile one lap course went out along one side of the river Finn, across the bridge at 7 miles and back to town via the main road. Conditions were excellent — misty but not wet. Mayo AC had 23 runners of whom 14 won medals. The club had five teams and all participants competed as individuals in age categories from senior to over 70. Four of the five teams won — two gold and two silver — and six individuals collected medals.

Mayo AC had 17 finishers in the Dublin City Marathon, three first time marathoners, many improved times, and all enjoyed the tremendous atmosphere and fantastic Mayo support among the thousands lining the 26.2 mile route. TJ McHugh was the first Mayo AC finisher in a brilliant 2.38, and Tom Waldron brought the team home in an amazing 4.59 in his o70s category. The race incorporated the Irish Marathon Championships and results are being checked by AAI. A quick check of the overall results indicates that three Mayo AC athletes are in with chance of individual medals. The masters men's o35 and o50 teams will also be in the running.

The atmosphere was tremendous all along the streets of Dublin and Mayo AC runners in their highly visible red and green singlets experienced fantastic support. They ran in teams and as individuals and seven of the 16 athletes won medals - a wonderful haul. But as always, every finisher was a winner.

In wet and windy Leenane on Sunday, Brendan Gill (Mayo AC) was the winner of a tough five mile race. The local terrain was hard enough, but gales and rain made it doubly difficult. Gill finished in 31.28, a great time in the circumstances. The Westport man is having a brilliant first season with Mayo AC, winning silver medals in both the National half and full marathons as part of their successful o-35 team. Other brave Mayo AC souls among the finishers in Leenane were Jimmy Feeney, PJ Hall and that man again, Christy O'Malley now heading towards completing 70 races before the end of 2009. The race was organised by the Leenane/Maam Branch of the Red Cross to raise funds for upkeep of an ambulance.
